The Lisbon Metro (and its Tiles)

To get from 'here to there' in Lisbon, we have a few options. We generally walk or take public transportation. Once in a while we take a taxi, but most of the time it is the metro or the train.

After using the metro system in New York, Boston, London, Paris, Madrid, and possibly a few other places, I can safely say that not all metros are created equal!

The Lisbon Metro System, however, is very good!

(Kay and I were obviously on the wrong side of the tracks the day I took this picture!)

But you have to be on your toes to use this form of transportation - when the train stops you have about 15 seconds for the passengers to both exit and enter the car. During rush hour this can be very tricky. (In Paris I got pushed back into the car and had to travel to the next stop, cross over to the other track, get on the opposite metro and return to my waiting friends - which I found a bit traumatic.)

Anyway...

There are four lines of the Lisbon Metro. We live on the Red Line, so I guess I would say that I like that one the best. It has the fewest stations of the four lines but it is the most modern.

There are more than 50 stations in the Lisbon Metro network and each of them is like its own little underground art gallery, uniquely decorated with tiles.

So, today, I just want to share with you what we see almost everyday, and sometimes fail to really appreciate.

Our stop is Moscavide. Unfortunately ours is not one of the cute ones. Just a little "Plain Jane" place to catch the Metro.
But, as they say, sufficient for our needs...

This is the card!
For only 20 euros a month we can travel on the metro, bus, train, and boat around Lisbon as much as we want.
A real deal, for sure.
